When the young fashion designer Gunilla Pontén was presented to the Swedish royal court in 1955, she wore this stunning white silk dress of her own design. At the time formal court dresses were not required anymore, but I am certain that the then 73 year old King Gustav VI Adolf and Queen Louise talked about the dress after the ceremony was over. My restoration and colorization of an image in the Wikipedia Commons archive.

Pontén´s court dress also caught the attention of the media:

"She created a sensation with her dress, designed by herself, that was very unconventional. It was inspired by Balenciaga and was called ”the court shock” in the newspapers and magazines. She landed on the front page of the major Swedish daily newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, and photos of Gunilla Pontén clad in that dress were spread throughout Europe." --

"Gunilla Pontén was educated at the Femina school of needlework and the tailoring school Tillskärarakademin. In 1948, she started on the fashion programme at Anders Beckmans skola (currently Beckmans designhögskola). From the 1950s until the 1970s, when she started her own company, she worked as a designer at various Swedish fashion companies. Her first collection appeared in 1955. It was not a success, which has been explained as her design being before its time. After that, things went better and her simple garments for young people, surprising in their contrasts, made a great hit.Gunilla Pontén has been attributed great significance for the development of Swedish teenage fashion. According to her, Swedish youth fashion was in very bad shape in the 1960s. The Swedish fashion industry lay way behind ”Swinging London” with among others Mary Quant’s youthful fashion, and Gunilla Pontén wanted to change all that. She wanted to get away from the boring old women’s fashion that she considered as typical of the Swedish market. It was Gunilla Pontén’s playful, colourful and unexpected garments that made her design desirable. She worked for a great number of Swedish fashion companies like DeHå, Saléns, Martinette, Stilmönster, Hettemarks and Wahls. In the mid 1960s, Gunilla Pontén designed collections but not under her own name. In the collections were trouser suits, minidresses and long cardigans in various materials like ribbed knitwear, raw silk and terrycloth. Bloomingdale’s in New York ordered 6,000 garments from one of the collections. One of the garments decorated the cover of Elle. She also designed clothes for Swedish films and theatre performances, as well as men’s clothes for Rydboholms during the 1970s.At the beginning of the 1970s, Gunilla Pontén started her own company. She had fifteen franchise boutiques of her own, in Stockholm and abroad. She also worked as a designer and colour coordinator for H&M. Her break-through as a fashion creator was great both nationally and internationally.

One side of Gunilla Pontén that is not as well known, is that of actress. She participated in 21 films in which she played supporting roles, for example in One Summer of Happiness in 1951.

Gunilla Pontén died in 2019, at 90 years of age. She lies buried in Lidingö Cemetery."

PERSONAL FUN FACT:This simple, unassuming Cloe has one of the greatest transformation stories in my Bratz collection. I believe I found her at the local flea market sometime in 2012. It was not all that long after Dad passed away. Colleen and I continued our Sunday family tradition--going to the flea market in hopes of finding treasure. As we wandered down the aisles of the outdoor venue, I spotted doll hair sticking out of a tool box on the ground. This was a bizarre location to find dolls by far. As I approached, I realized the victims were Bratz. One was a woe begone Sleep-Over Leah, the other was this Fashion Designer Cloe. Admittedly I was a little pickier about my doll selection back then. I wasn't as particular as say I was in 2011. But due to the fact that I didn't have loads of spare Bratz clothes in storage, I couldn't afford to adopt too many nude dolls in a short time frame. Fortunately years of dedicated eBay and flea market purchases resolved this problem. But when I found Cloe and Leah, I was not as equipped to take them on. I remember that the man who was selling the dirty duo wanted more money for them than I felt they were worth. But could I leave two naked dolls left to rot in this filthy tool box? Certainly not with the way my dolly conscience works. So I bought both gals, and to my dismay, they STANK of cigarettes. This Cloe was spared the nicotine discoloration that Leah had not escaped. However she smelled as if she had been chain smoking for years, even after several baths. But Cloe and Leah were worth all that effort and love. For two shabby dolls, they have lead quite the luxury filled life in recent years. Cloe got to wear fashion packs for sometime. I never thought I'd end up reuniting her with this rather mundane ensemble. But less than a year later, this outfit turned up on my Magic Hair Color Leah (how ironic that it was a Leah)!

I've got this doll since ever (2002 maybe), she arrived during one of the first International (from USA) transaction I took in the early era of the web stores. She was actually a doll I didn't purchased, the vendor wrongly sent me her; I had ordered insted 3 Silkstone Lingerie #3 Barbies, two arrived but the third was this one. I did't sent her back because it took almost one year (no joke, I sent many emails and many phone calls to US) to arrive the package in Italy; I was too frustrated to start over again... and, at last, I love her!

Do you know Rose Bertin, the French dressmaker who created the most fabulous dresses for Queen Marie-Antoinette? She is also famous because she brought fashion and Haute Couture to the forefront of popular culture. Frédérique, aka Kikihalb, is simply as creative and gifted. Just like in the fashion industry for humans, nearly every Blythe designer is in the ready-to-wear sector, but Kikihalb’s designs are definitely exceptional and one-of-a-kind, exactly as “Haute Couture” is. Everything is in the details! If you look closely, you will be blown away because we all know how tiny the size of a Blythe dress is! Without further delay, I am very pleased and honored to introduce you to the amazingly talented Frédérique. Be prepared for being filled with wonder!

Ok Tarsh or Natashya whichever any of you would prefer and me have been friends for a fair while now, and we’ve been tossing up when where and what to do and when to do it and a million different concepts for about six months now. With her been a fashion designer and me been a photographer it’s a perfect mix, however the first shoot we end up doing is the least planned and furthest away from any concepts we’ve been working through or I had in my head, but hey we work with what with have even if it is rushed and last minute…

So the shoot took place in an awesome hotel (that wont allow me to name it) that I had arranged to go through for the day and use for the shoot, they were awesome people very professional and very friendly considering it was a rush last minute booking and a very busy period for the they were more than happy to accommodate it’s always awesome to work with people that have the same mentality.

Ended up waking up the morning of the shoot with the worst fever and case of the flu I have had in a while really distracting and a real spirit duller no one wants to be sick especially when they have to work haha. Got to the hotel at 10am and set everything up measured light levels on all my lenses and chilled out, watching the fashion channel until the crew got to the shoot (that channel is pretty inspirational for photographers). It’s the first time I’ve worked with a proper model, make-up artist, and stylist it makes the job a hell of a lot easier and less stressful, I hope you guys like the way everything turned out…

You will be seeing a lot more work from me and Tarsh soon, and there is a lot of great stuff happening that will hopefully be all out in the air soon haha…

Also I’m off to Sydney on Monday and Japan Next Saturday, I’ll have my laptop and internet the whole time so lot’s of photo’s, bloggage, and news from travels as they happen
